the christmas card photo shoot...

The custom of sending Christmas cards started in Britain in 1840 when the first 'Penny Post' public postal deliveries began. (Helped by the new railway system, the public postal service was the 19th century's communication revolution, just as email is for us today.) As printing methods improved, Christmas cards were produced in large numbers from about 1860. They became even more popular in Britain when a card could be posted in an unsealed envelope for one half-penny - half the price of an ordinary letter.Traditionally, Christmas cards showed religious pictures - Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus, or other parts of the Christmas story. Today, pictures are often jokes, winter pictures, Father Christmas, or romantic scenes of life in past times. What the penny post was to people in the 1800's the internet is to us today. I am receiving more 'ecards' every year. But every year, our family goes through a ritual of getting just the right photo for the card. I used to get the photo taken, card made (by hand) and then addressed and stamped and in the mail by the first part of December-- right after the Thanksgiving break. I had a friend call and thank me this year for not getting my card to her mailbox by December 1! Not that i didn't try. But as children grow older, have their own lives and OPINIONS, it just isn't that easy. Here is a look at some of the antics we went through (using the timer on the camera because this year, we also neglected to get a photographer)

THANKSGIVING IS...

football, puzzles, family and best friends, a temple trip, board games that last all night, an occasional nap (some of us got more of this than others),amazing food, cooperative cooking, annual hand yam-smashing, and this year a five-day old baby and even a game of quidditch! Thanks Daines for hosting again this year! "Hold fast to the blessings which God has provided for you. Yours is not the task to gain them, they are here; yours is the part of cherishing them." J. Reuben Clark

Handel's Messiah

Here is something wonderful to start off the season. I know it is early--still pre-thanksgiving, but it is definitely something to be grateful for--and you will feel gratitude as you watch, promise! I love the music--long time favorite-- since our days in the east when, for our first Christmas, we visited and sang the Hallelujah Chorus at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. But this spontaneity and surprise is beautiful--just beautiful!

Josh playing Balthazar in the BYU production of Romeo and Juliet. Showing now thru Dec 4

Romeo and Juliet are caught between two worlds, as their families feud to the death. Fights, witty lines, secret marriages, and untimely deaths--the play is unforgettable!

"This day's black fate on more days doth depend:
This but begins the woe others must end."

- William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, 3.1

that's Josh "kicking up his heals" in the precisely choreographed fight scene. the play is set during the turn of the century in the "guilded age."

It is a wonderful show (which we have enjoyed two weekends in a row, now--big fans) Thanks to the grandparents who made the trip to see it! Josh did a fantastic job. We loved every minute. (all 150 of them! ha!)

MAN vs WILD

a woodpecker and his mate have found a new roost: under the eaves of our porch--it has become brian's mission to put an end to their happy habitating..so we looked up what to do online and found:

Prevention:

Woodpecker prevention is based upon physical barriers and scare techniques. Physical barriers created in pecking areas will help. Commonly these are made of steel mesh. Noise scare techniques are also effective in some cases.

in this case, his closest scare technique was a compound bow lying around in the basement. . ha! (don't worry, he didn't shoot them--but they must have gotten "scared" because we have not seen them since!)
